Domen Zavrl – Real Asset Investment Specialist

This is the blog of real asset investment specialist Domen Zavrl, who has extensive experience in the fields of international business, real estate development, commodities trading, natural resources, business brokerage, structured financing and securitisations. Education

Mr Zavrl holds two PhDs. The first he achieved in 2003 from Klagenfurt, Austria, which explored the subject ‘Applied Macroeconomics: Impact of Privatisation on Bank Performance.’ In 2006, Mr Zavrl embarked on his second PhD on the subject of ‘Stabilisation of Non-Linear Real-Life Systems’ at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. He gained this qualification in 2010 and is currently enrolled at Stanford University, studying several different courses. Mr Zavrl has also successfully completed a number of finance and financial accounting courses at Dartmouth University’s Tuck School of Business.

Fluent in English, French, Italian and German, Mr Zavrl has had many papers published (or referenced) in articles and journals, as well as papers published as part of conference proceedings. These papers include ‘An Institutional Dynamics Model of the Euro Zone Crisis: Greece as an Illustrative Example’ for the 2010 Systems Dynamic Conference in Seoul, Korea, and ‘A System Dynamics Model of the Greek Crisis: The Debt Trap and the Way Forward’ for the 2013 System Dynamics Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US.

Career History

Mr Zavrl has held several important positions during his career to date. These include Slovenian shadow minister of finance from 2003 to 2004, principal of MBB ISTA from 2006 to 2007 and director of Framingham Asset Management from 2011 to the present day. Framingham Asset Management formerly held 42,600 shares in one of the largest banks in the Balkans.

Commodities Trading

As an expert in commodities trading, Mr Zavrl is knowledgeable in the purchase, sale and trade of raw products like gold, oil and coffee. There are two types of commodities: soft commodities, which include agricultural goods and livestock, and hard commodities, which are typically natural resources.

Cryptography

Mr Zavrl takes a keen interest in the subject of cryptography, including post-quantum cryptography (PQC). This concerns the development of algorithms capable of resisting attack from the quantum computers of the future. Research into PQC mainly focuses on six approaches: multivariate cryptography, lattice-based cryptography, hash-based cryptography, isogeny-based cryptography, code-based cryptography and symmetric key quantum resistance.

Hobbies & Interests

When he’s not working, Mr Zavrl enjoys a diverse range of hobbies and interests, including winter hiking and whitewater kayaking.
